March 2003 saw the completion of a seven-year regeneration programme
(SRB2) in the West Itchen area of Southampton, which was managed by
the Southampton Regeneration Partnership (SRP). Over £26m was
spent by the Programme, which attracted additional private and public
sector money totalling some £55 million, resulting in more than
£80 million of new money being invested in the area over the seven
years of the SRB2. This represented a major and concerted attempt to
begin the regeneration of this area of the inner city.
Much has been achieved. Some run down areas of the inner city have
been regenerated and the street scene in some key areas has been improved
(Bellway Homes, St Marys Street). Exciting developments include
a harbour scene, a hotel (Travel Inn, Six Dials), an enterprise centre
(Basepoint plc, Andersons Road), and new or improved community
centres. A lot of effort has gone into reducing crime, providing access
to training and a range of youth schemes (Underground 135).
Many projects have directly or indirectly benefited the environment.
